DNA Sampling in Peru Blocked
DNA Sampling in Peru is being Blocked by the local indigenous leaders of the area. This is not the first time this type of development has occurred because of a understanding with a new technology.
When photography was first invented, the North American tribes were scared that with each picture taken of them, their spirits would be captured.
Today it is the National Geographic Society’s Genographic Project that is misunderstood. Their aim is to collect samples from around the world of indigenous human populations. The purpose is to save this genetic information for future use.
The problem stems from a mix up on the verbal consent the NGS was given to conduct this survey. The local regional government of Cusco is claiming there is a local ordinance requiring any scientific study to first obtain notarized permission to conduct their work.
This type of collecting has been going on since 2007 with no problems. The issue has been raised by the Q’eros, who believe they are direct descendants of the very first Incas. They claim they do not need a study to know who they are or where their roots are from.
